Several weeks ago, Phonak, one of the world's largest hearing aid manufacturers released a new family of hearing aids called Lumity. After some time researching and testing the devices, we are pleased to offer them to patients in our practice as an option for improving their hearing abilities in a variety of situations.
For the most part, Lumity’s improvements over Phonak’s previous family, Paradise, come in a number of different ways. First, the devices continue a trend of each generation of hearing aids becoming “smarter” at determining what sounds are important in an acoustic environment versus which ones can be de-emphasized. This is no small task as in many instances, the most important sound is one voice in a sea of other voices. Through noise reduction and directional microphones, the Lumity devices provide greater signal-to-noise ratio than previous generations of devices. This means that our patients will better follow conversations in restaurants, family gatherings, religious services, etc.
Other improvements include casings that are less susceptible to dust/moisture damage that comes from every day use, an improved charger, and improved Bluetooth connections.
